Watford -vs- West Ham

Boothroyd was quick to pump the West Ham boss for information on how to escape the Championship via the play-offs, a feat Watford achieved last season, 12 months after the Hammers.

Pardew offered his candid opinion ahead of the Hornets' comprehensive victory over a much-fancied Leeds side at the Millennium Stadium.

But when Boothroyd attempted to add to his bank of knowledge by picking Pardew's brains once again on how to prosper in the top flight he found the way suddenly barred.

Speaking ahead of Tuesday night's game, which sees the Hammers visit Vicarage Road, Boothroyd said: ``I spoke to Alan quite a bit last year, not just about life in the Premiership but also about the play-off scenario.

``I had a good chat with him about that and he offered his help in the summer should we get to the Premiership. But since I've called him he has changed his phone number.

``Perhaps he sees me more of a threat now than he did last year. He changed his phone as soon as we got promoted on purpose, that's what I think.''

Pardew is regarded as an up-and-coming younger manager who has made it clear he regards the England job as his number one long term aim.

And Boothroyd, who is only in his mid-thirties, believed there were many similarities between the two.

He said: ``He's a lot older and experienced than me but he is very ambitious and there is an alignment there. He is also very thorough and there is an alignment there as well.''

Boothroyd has reported no fresh injury worries ahead of Tuesday's game with West Ham.

The Hornets boss is set to stick with the same squad that performed well but lost narrowly at Everton on Saturday.

Centre-back Jay DeMerit is in line for a recall to the starting line-up having shaken off the ankle problem that had allowed teenager Adrian Mariappa to start at Goodison Park.

Carlton Cole is determined to prove he can be a top-class striker for West Ham after falling foul of the Roman Abramovich regime at Chelsea.

The former England Under-21 international was forced to sever ties with Stamford Bridge after being squeezed out of the picture by the sheer number of expensive foreign imports.

If it was not Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink ahead of him then it was Gianfranco Zola, Eidur Gudjohnsen, Mateja Kezman, Didier Drogba, Hernan Crespo or Andriy Shevchenko.

Cole could not stand another season kicking his heels on the bench or, worse still, outside of the match-day squad all together so he pressed hard for a move.

Cole said: ``It has been like that for years now. Only Jody Morris, John Terry and myself have come through the youth system as home grown English players. Robert Huth also came through and it was only us four who have gone on to make first team appearance.

``John Terry is the exception, he is the main man now, but there weren't a lot of young players coming through Chelsea, though I think they are starting to invest in the youth academy now.

``I wanted to leave last summer. Jose Mourinho persuaded me to stay but I wanted to play more often.

``I wasn't even in the squad half the time so it was hard for me to take. There might be a few players at Chelsea this season doing the same shift I was doing.

``I didn't really want to be involved in that again and Jose said he understood where I was coming from, which is why I got in touch with West Ham and West Ham took me.

``It is disappointing I didn't make many appearances for Chelsea but I have to look to the future now.''

Jonathan Spector has been included in the West Ham squad for the clash at Watford.

Spector is now fully recovered from the shoulder injury that ruled him out of the United States' World Cup campaign. He is added to the West Ham squad that beat Charlton 3-1 on Saturday.

Winger Matthew Etherington (knee) and goalkeeper Robert Green (groin) are still out injured while George McCartney (ankle) is a longer term problem.
